After finishing school, I decided to do a Voluntary Social Year (FSJ) and set my sights on the East of Germany, specifically Halle an der Saale. This decision came about through my connection with the church. As a believer from a free church background, I had the chance to meet a local pastor who introduced me to the city and the members of his congregation, sparking my interest in the community there.
To fulfill the requirements for a state-recognized FSJ, I searched for a suitable workplace and found an opportunity with the Diakonie Mitteldeutschland. I worked in a workshop for people with disabilities, taking on roles as a caregiver in the support group and as a driver for food, materials, and individuals. This year gave me valuable insights into caregiving, teamwork, and the importance of community support, while also allowing me to contribute meaningfully to the lives of others.
